Il Present continuous, o Present Progressive o presente continuo in italiano, è un tempo verbale inglese che spesso si tende a considerare “facile”, un po’ da corso di inglese per principianti. Eppure per uno studente italiano che studia inglese seconda lingua (ESL), anche il Present Continuous può avere le sue complessità. Soprattutto per quanto riguarda le regole di formazione e costruzione della frase e il suo uso in alternativa al Present Simple.
Inoltre, al di là di quanto una verbe tense possa essere considerata più o meno facile, ricorda che per diventare veramente fluente in inglese è importante conoscere a fondo le forme dei verbi e saperle usare senza pensarci. 🗣️

Present continuous in inglese spiegato facile
Il present continuous è un tempo verbale del presente; è una forma composta, cioè formato da due parole:
- I am writing; you are reading.
Come si forma
Il present continuous si ottiene dal tempo presente del verbo to be unito alla forma -ing di un verbo, secondo la struttura seguente:
Soggetto + Simple Present to Be + -ing form
- I am writing
- You are reading
- She is listening
- We are waiting
- You are leaving
- They are sleeping
Domande al Present Continuous
La forma interrogativa del presente progressivo in inglese si fa secondo lo schema seguente:
Simple Present to Be + Soggetto + -ing form?
- Are you listening?
- Is she leaving?
- Are they coming?
Come si formano le frasi negative
Le negative si formano aggiungendo la negazione not (spesso abbreviato n’t ) alla forma del verbo to be, secondo questo schema:
Soggetto + Simple Present to Be + not / n’t + -ing form
- I’m not working.
- Jeff isn’t coming to the party.
- They are not / aren’t eating.
Quando si usa il presente progressivo in inglese
In inglese, si usa il Presente continuo per parlare di :
- Azioni che avvengono nel momento in cui parla: I’m just leaving (sto uscendo adesso)
- Programmi per il futuro già decisi: Next weekend we are going to the seaside (Il prossimo week-end andiamo al mare)
- Azioni o situazioni temporanee I’m working in Rome for the next three weeks.
- Azioni diverse da quelle che avvengono o facciamo sempre: These days most people are sending instant messages instead of calling.
- Evento che si ripete sempre: My parents are always arguing.
Quando non si usa
Nella grammatica inglese, il Present Continuous (e tutti gli altri tempi progressivi) non si usa per i verbi stativi. Sono verbi stativi quelli che esprimono non una azione ma una condizione permanente, un sentimento o una sensazione, possesso o capacità:
- To be
- Verbi di pensiero, emozioni, sensazioni (believe, know, like, love, prefer, hate, remember, want, wish, agree, ecc.)
- Verbi di senso (look, smell, taste ecc)
- Verbo di possesso (own, possess)
- Verbi di peso e capacità (measure, weight ecc).
Con tutti questi verbi si usa il Present simple.

10 Esercizi Present continuous e Question tag
Hai presente le question tags, quelle brevi frasi come isn’t it?, can you? o didn’t they? che aggiungiamo a un’affermazione per trasformarla in una domanda? Sono molto comuni nel parlato!
Le tag questions (cioè quelle speciali domande formate da una frase + una question tag) sono una specie di domanda retorica, che formuliamo quando ci aspettiamo che chi ci ascolta sia d’accordo con noi:
- This pizza is delicious, isn’t it?
- They are not coming, are they?
Come vedi dagli esempi, quando la frase è positiva il question tag è negativo; se la frase principale è negativa, il question tag è positivo.
Se nella frase principale c’è un verbo ausiliare, lo usiamo per formare il question tag (guarda il secondo esempio qui sopra ☝️.

10 Esercizi: frasi con il Present Continuous & Short answers
Le short answers (risposte brevi) sono il modo in cui in inglese si risponde alle yes / no questions, cioè quelle domande chiuse a cui si può rispondere solo con un sì o con un no, come ad esempio:
– Are you listening to me? – Yes I am.
Le risposte brevi in inglese sono più educate di un yes o un no “secco”.
